What We Like About The Total Gym XLS

The Total Gym XLS has a few really neat features that we absolutely need to talk about.

One of the things that we really like about the Total Gym XLS is that it features over 80 different exercises that can be done on it. The Total Gym XLS comes with a squat accessory, a wing attachment, and a leg pulley accessory. This is of course including the gliding seat board and the pulley system too. The point is that you can exercise literally every single muscle in your body with the Total Gym XLS. The Total Gym XLS is also oriented towards flexibility and cardio training, which is definitely another big bonus. The fact of the matter is that the Total Gym XLS can provide you with a very well rounded workout.

We like the fact that the Total Gym XLS uses your own body weight to provide you with resistance, thus keeping it fairly lightweight. The incline level can be adjusted to various different positions in order to increase or decrease the amount of resistance which you are faced with.

Something else that you are going to like about the Total Gym XLS is that it has a small footprint. Unlike many other home gyms, this model is small and compact. It is a little long when in use, but the size of it is nothing compared to various other home gym options. There is also the fact that the Total Gym XLS can fold down to be a little larger than your average ironing board. This means storing it under your bed or in a closet is about as easy as it gets. The whole thing only weighs 80 pounds, making it easy to move from one spot to another.

We already mentioned this before, but we do really like the fact that the Total Gym XLS comes virtually assembled. You can literally take this thing out of the box and you are good to go.

Something else that very impressive about the Total Gym XLS is its durability. This home gym has a user weight limit of 400 pounds, making it one of the strongest total gyms out there. The pulley system has a tensile strength of 1,000 pounds, which is indeed quite impressive. This whole home gym system is built to last for a very long time.

What We Don’t Like About The Total Gym XLS

There are a couple of things which could be improved upon when it comes to the Total Gym XLS, so what are they?

The Total Gym XLS does not have any resistance other than that provided by the incline of the machine in combination with your own bodyweight. While the Total Gym XLS is ideal for a good mix of strength, cardio, and flexibility training, it is not ideal for serious weightlifters.

Paying close to $1,000 for something that does not come with any added weight or resistance seems just a little bit pricey, but the cardio and flexibility training you get are worth the investment.

Alternatives To The Total Gym XLS

To give you a bit of a reference point, let’s compare the Total Gym XLS to some of the other mid range home gym models out there.

Bowflex Blaze Home Gym

Bowflex Blaze Home Gym Review

Comparing the Total Gym XLS to any other mid range model here is slightly difficult seeing as it is so unique. On one hand, the Total Gym XLS is small, it is compact, lightweight, and easily stored thanks to folding down. Moreover, the Totally Gym XLS allows for over 80 different exercises, some of which are oriented towards flexibility and cardio training. On the other hand, the Bowflex Blaze Home Gym is big, bulky, and heavy, but it is also much better for weight training. The Bowflex Blaze has actual resistance other than your own body weight, making it much more ideal for weight lifting purposes.

Marcy SM-4008 Combo Smith Machine

The points we made when comparing the Bowflex Blaze to the Total Gym XLS are more or less the same as when comparing the XLS to the Marcy SM-4008 Combo Smith Machine. The Marcy is much bigger, heavier, and bulkier. The Marcy Smith Machine is a free weight Smith cage that is oriented purely towards weight training, so it does have a whole lot of weight resistance. On the other hand, the Total Gym XLS is meant to train your muscle strength, flexibility, and cardio, giving you a well-rounded workout. Which one you get really depends on what your preferences and overall workout goals are.

Final Thoughts On The Total Gym XLS

At the end of the day, if you are looking for a decent weight training tool that also incorporates some aspects of cardio, the Total Gym XLS is the right way to go. This is a small and compact piece of workout equipment ideal for even the smallest of homes. Even though it is small, it is still very strong with a high weight limit. The bottom line is that the Total Gym XLS will give you a really good total body workout.
